Discover Which Transmission Type Fits Your Driving Style

Which Transmission Type is Right For You?

Is it time to start looking for a new vehicle? This is an important task, and it’s not one you want to take lightly. You’ve got to think about the make and model you want as well as a vehicle that will fit your budget. In addition, you need to consider the features that suit your driving style and needs. But one aspect that people tend to overlook is what type of transmission you want the vehicle to have. You don’t want to purchase a model with a transmission that you feel uncomfortable with.

Make sure you understand the four different transmission types: manual, automatic, continuously variable, and semi-automatic. Each one has benefits, and each is a little different from the others. What one driver prefers may differ from what someone else wants.

If you aren’t sure which one is right for you, the team at Ascension Honda can help. Our sales associates will let you know which models in our inventory have which transmission types. Then, you make a good decision when you shop.

Manual Transmission

Manual transmission is far less common than it once was. Today, you won’t find this type on as many vehicles as you will find other transmission types.

It’s by far the most hands-on type, as it requires driver intervention. Manual transmission is often referred to as “stick shift,” because of the device located between the two seats in the center console area. The driver manually moves the stick shift from one position to another to change gears.

Most manual transmissions have five gears, which the driver must shift between when speeding up and slowing down. In addition, on the floor to the left of the brake is a clutch pedal. The driver presses it down with his or her left foot while shifting gears.

Although it can be difficult to learn, it is appealing to some people because of the following benefits:

  • Manual transmission lets the driver be in full control of the shifting.
  • It is usually cheaper to repair a car with a manual transmission than other transmission types.
  • Cars with a manual transmission get better gas mileage.
  • It costs less to repair than other types

Automatic Transmission

On the other end of the spectrum is automatic transmission. Because the shifting from one gear to the next happens without driver input, there is no clutch pedal or stick shift. This is the most common type of transmission. You can find it on all vehicle types, including sedans, trucks, SUVs, and minivans.

Advantages of an automatic transmission include:

  • It is easier to learn how to use, as the driver does not have to perform any functions to operate it.
  • It can be safer to drive an automatic transmission vehicle because the driver will not have to take his or her hands off the wheel to use a stick shift.
  • An automatic transmission is smooth and seamless.
  • This type of transmission is effective in stop-and-go city traffic.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

A continuously variable transmission, or CVT for short, is gaining popularity. Often, it is found on smaller vehicles, including compact SUVs. The chief difference between a CVT and other types is that it uses a system of belts and pulleys instead of gear. It has infinite gear ratios as well. Because there is no stick shift or clutch, it is a form of automatic transmission.

Here are some benefits of a CVT:

  • A CVT provides the driver with excellent control of the vehicle.
  • A CVT has few parts and components to repair and maintain.
  • Vehicles with CVT have good fuel economy.
  • A CVT gives the car good acceleration and a smooth driving experience in any condition.

Semi-Automatic Transmission

Lastly, a semi-automatic transmission is a good blend of manual and automatic transmission. It affords more opportunities for the driver to engage with the transmission process but isn’t as involved as manual transmission. There is no clutch, but the driver does shift manually. However, instead of using a stick shift, the driver can change gears by using buttons or paddles on or near the steering wheel.

People like a semi-automatic transmission for the following reasons:

  • It is easier to shift gears with a semi-automatic transmission than it is with a manual transmission.
  • With a semi-automatic transmission, the driver can have input over shifting.
  • A semi-automatic transmission is good for high-performance vehicles.
  • It is easier to learn to use than manual transmission.
