Thanks to extensive coastal restoration efforts and hurricane protection programs, the waters of the Parish have blended, dropping in salinity to a more brackish level. This has made the Parish a conducive environment for both saltwater and freshwater fish species.

Paddle Out

The eastern side of Bernard Parish is home to several prime fishing communities. If you find yourself around Hopedale, Shell Beach, or Delacroix Island, you can take advantage of the nearby commercial marinas and launch from the shore in a kayak. These boats make it easy to paddle out and hunt for your new favorite fishing spot, and while many species can be found in the same waters, you can explore and cast all around to see what areas work best for what you’re looking for. If you’re hunting for catfish or bass, you might have some luck around Delacroix, since the water there is on the fresher side.
